STORM FIELD WEATHERMAN

WABC STORM FIELD

His first foray into weather casting took place as part of WABC’s Eyewitness News program. In March 1976, Field was hired by the station and made his first television appearances when he covered Hurricane Belle, followed by a job when Tex Antoine was ill. It also did weekend weather broadcasts and 11pm weekdays.

On November 29, 1976, he became the permanent meteorologist replacing an interrupted Antoine, who had been suspended after an inappropriate remark touching a rape story five days earlier.

His primary responsibilities were the 6pm and 11pm news, with other meteorologists like Ira Joe Fisher and Sam Champion appearing on the 5pm news. In 1978, Field joined the morning team with Shelli Sonstein and Jimmy Fink at New York Radio Station WPLJ.

In addition to performing his meteorological duties, in 1981, Field became the host of the 5:00 pm Eyewitness News broadcast, working alongside Tracy Egan and (later) Kaity Tong. It anchored until 1983, when Tom Snyder took over the news, and continued until 1984.

Field left WABC in 1991 and was replaced by Sam Champion on the 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm Eyewitness News broadcasts.

WCBS STORM CAMP

After leaving WABC, Field joined his father, Dr. Frank Field at WCBS, on August 24, 1992, making it the first time the two had worked together.

In anticipation of its debut, WCBS shot a series of commercials with Field and his father using puns on the names of both meteorologists. He remained with the WCBS until 1997, succeeding Irv Gikofsky as the station’s chief meteorologist and subsequently switched to the WCBS morning news towards the end of his time there.

WWOR STORM FIELD

His third and final weather station was at WWOR in 1997, where he used to report on the station’s 10pm news and also served as WWOR’s chief meteorologist. While working at WWOR, Field had another chance to work alongside his father who was hired by WWOR as a weekend meteorologist in the early 2000s before retiring.

Field left WWOR in 2007 after a full decade due to cuts at both WWOR and sister station WNYW and was replaced by former WCBS Ponte weather personality Audrey .
