Who is Luke Steele? Meet the lead singer of The Sleepy Jackson

Luke Steele is an Australian musician, songwriter and singer. Steele is the lead singer of the electronic music duo Empire of the Sun and lead songwriter, as well as the lead singer of the alternative rock group The Sleepy Jackson.

Luke Steele is a member of a family of musicians. His father, Rick, is a blues guitarist and harmonica player. Steele’s sister Katy is the lead singer of Perth’s indie rock band Little Birdy. His brother Jake joined The Sleepy Jackson in 2008 playing computer samples and played keyboards for the now defunct Perth band Injured Ninja. Steele’s other brother, Jesse, was an original member of The Sleepy Jackson.

In 2006, Steele became engaged to a magazine editor, Jodi (aka ‘Snappy Dolphin’), who also joined The Sleepy Jackson for the band’s 2008 national tour. In October 2008, the couple had their first child, a daughter named Sunny Tiger.

Steele has a wife named Jodi Steel. The couple got engaged in 2006. Jodi is popularly known as Snappy Dolphin and is a magazine editor who also joined The Sleepy Jackson on the band’s national tour in 2008. Together, they have a daughter named Sunny Tiger, born in October 2008.

LUKE STEELE THE SLEEPY JACKSON

‘The Sleepy Jackson’ is a band founded in 1998. The band featured Steele on vocals and guitar, his brother Jesse on drums and Matthew O’Connor on bass. Both their self-titled debut EP and a follow-up single, ‘Miniskirt’, were released independently. Jesse left the band in 2000 and was replaced by Paul Keenan.

In late 2000, The Sleepy Jackson began a national tour with Jebediah. In March 2001, the band went on tour with Magic Dirt and Motor Ace, adding Ronan Charles to the keyboard. Steele eventually completed the tour as a solo after the other band members left the tour and returned home.

In addition to playing solo shows, Steele has recruited Malcolm Clark (drums), Justin Burford (guitar) and Rodney Aravena (bass). Sleepy Jacksons moved to Sydney where they recorded another EP, Let Your Love Be Love (2002).

In 2003, the band toured extensively playing in Australia, the United States and Europe. He released his debut album ‘Lovers’ in 2003. By the end of 2003, Burford and Aravena left the band.

On July 1, 2006, the band released their second album ‘Personality – One Was a Spider, One Was a Bird’ which debuted at number 10 on the ARIA Albums Charts the following week. Joining Steele and Clark on this album were Dave Symes and Felix Bloxsom, as well as Lee Jones (formerly in the Perth band Spencer Tracy). Bloxsom has since been replaced by Luke’s brother Jake and his wife Jodi, aka ‘Snappy Dolphin’.

LUKE STEELE EMPIRE OF THE SUN

In 2000, Steele and Littlemore were introduced by Steele’s A&R executive Simon Moor. They were both signed with EMI and had worked on independent projects. They became friends and did a collaboration, ‘Tell the Girls That I’m Not Hangin’ Out, ‘which appeared on The Sleepy Jackson’s 2003 debut album, Lovers.

On October 4th 2008, they released their debut album ‘Walking on a Dream’. The album came out at number eight on the ARIA Chart and peaked at number six.

On June 17, 2013, they released their second album ‘Ice on the Dune’. In October 2014, Empire of the Sun starred in Sandance at Atlantis the Palm in Dubai and embarked on a short world tour in the fall of 2015.
