Arlene Francis was an American actress, radio and television talk show host, and game speaker. She is known for her longtime role as a speaker on the TV show What’s My Line? on which she appeared regularly for 25 years, from 1950 to 1975, both online and as a syndicated version of the show.
ARLENE FRANCIS EARLY LIFE
Francis was born on October 20, 1907 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Leah (née Davis) and Aram Kazanjian. His Armenian father was studying art in Paris at the age of 16 when he learned that both of his parents had died in one of the Hamidian massacres perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire in Anatolia between 1894 and 1896.
He emigrated to the United States and became a portrait photographer, opening his studio in Boston in the early 20th century. Later in life, Kazanjian painted canvasses of dogwood, ‘flying rabbits’ and other nature scenes, selling them at auction in New York.
When Francis was seven, his father decided the opportunities were greater in New York and moved with his family to an apartment in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Francis remained a New Yorker until her son moved her to a San Francisco nursing home in 1995

He began his Broadway career in early 1928 with the flopped comedy “La Gringa” directed by Hamilton MacFadden and starring Claudette Colbert. She remained very active there until early 1954 when her television engagements increased. Arlene continued to appear on Broadway with much less frequency until 1975
He started practicing yoga in the 1950s when it was unusual for New Yorkers of his generation. Didn’t he ever mention it in What’s My Line? (1950). Arlene was able to share her interest with Jess Stearn, author of one of the first best-selling books on yoga. Dorothy Kilgallen put the book in her newspaper column in 1965, mistakenly spelling her name as ‘Jesse’. Either Dorothy or her editor entered the article right after one about Johnnie Ray’s upcoming singing engagement in Las Vegas.
It hosted a daily radio show broadcast locally on New York’s WOR from 1960 to 1985, when the station canceled it.
On December 4, 1954, she was awarded a citation for outstanding performance in her profession from Emerson College in Boston.
It was awarded 2 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for radio at 6432 Hollywood Boulevard and for television at 1735 Vine Street in Hollywood, California.
His favorite song was ‘My Funny Valentine’, composed by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.
He often wore glasses, usually colored and typically out of sight, due to various eye injuries and hyperopia (hyperopia).
She was offered the role of Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote (1984), but declined because she felt the part would be mundane.
On his April 31957 television show, Home, he interviewed then Senator and future President John F. Kennedy and Ms. Jacqueline Kennedy.
