Turns out you weren’t the only one throwing stuff at your screen when the last four words of ‘A Mom as a Friend’ were said.
In fact, even 35-year-old actress Alexis Bledel had a hard time accepting that her character Rory ended things on a very pregnant note.
OK, she probably didn’t actually pitch things, but on Sunday morning at the Deadline panel for the Emmy Contender she said Rory’s ending was ‘hard for [her] to digest.’
When asked if she felt satisfied with the turning point ending, Bledel said:
It certainly wasn’t the ending I was expecting. I told Amy I was hoping Rory would end on a high note. After all her hard work, I wanted to see her succeed and thrive. So it was a hard thing to swallow. I was hoping we would see that she had lived an interesting life and been satisfied to this point where her grandfather dies and [she] goes home.
Oof. Me too, Alexis, me too.
As fans know, Rory hadn’t really lived the ‘fulfilled life’ that Bledel hoped for. Instead, he wrote an article about Atlantic in 10 years and hasn’t done much since.
But Bledel went on to say he trusted showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino’s decisions.
Bledel said,
But, because I know Amy after all these years, I knew it was her true intention and it was something that satisfied her as a writer because she knew the reaction she would have from the audience … So I trusted her.
Bledel’s on-screen mom Lauren Graham had a slightly less diplomatic reaction to those last four words.
‘It was a complete surprise for me,’ Graham said. ‘It’s not an end, it’s a cliffhanger!’
