The family in the 1950s decided to move to Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is said that while Albert Green was a teenager, he was kicked out of the family home for listening to Jackie Wilson from his devoutly religious father.

AL GREEN WIFE

On October 18, 1974, shortly after the release of ‘Al Green Explores Your Mind’, Green’s girlfriend, Mary Woodson White, attacked him before committing suicide at her Memphis home. Despite the fact that White was an already married woman, he became angry when Green refused to marry her. He got rid of his anger when he soaked him with a pot of boiling semolina (corn-based food that is ground into a coarse meal and then boiled) causing severe burns on Green’s back, stomach and arms. Then she went ahead taking her .38 pistol and killed herself. Police during their investigation found a note in White’s bag stating his intentions and reasons.

Al Green then met the love of her heart, Shirley Kyles and the couple married in 1977 but unfortunately, Shirley filed for divorce in 1978 and 1981. In the final divorce complaint, Shirley stated that Green had referred her to domestic violence during their marriage. . Green also accused her of ‘cruel and inhumane treatment’ in a counter-complaint. She then testified and said that in the year 1978, while she was five months pregnant, Green beat her with a boot for refusing to have sex. The assault resulted in head injuries, which required stitches. After the accident, she filed for divorce, but they reconciled. There before, Green denied having beaten his wife, but under oath in 1982 he admitted to marital abuse.

His album, 1971’s Al Green Gets Next to You, featured the hit R&B cover of Temptations’ I Can’t Get Next to You, recorded in a slow blues-oriented version, and also contained his first significant hit, ‘Tired of Being Alone’, which sold one million copies and was certified gold, becoming the first of seven singles.

After the incident with the whites, Green released his first gospel album, Lord Will Make a Way, which was released in 1980. He then starred alongside Patti LaBelle in the Broadway show, ‘Your Arms Too Short to Box with God ‘(1982). He Is the Light reunited Green with Willie Mitchell was released in 1985 while 2 years later, followed by Soul Survivor, he presented the minor hit, ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright’, which reached number 22 on the R&B chart, his first top 40 R&B. hit from ‘I Feel Good’ in 1978.

Al Green then returned to secular music in 1988 recording ‘Put a Little Love in Your Heart’ with Annie Lennox. The song became Green’s first pop hit since 1974. The score was included in the film, Scrooged. He had a hit in 1989 with ‘The Message is Love’ with producer Arthur Baker, and 2 years later, he recorded the theme song for the short-lived show Good Sports.

Green received his 9th Grammy Award for his collaboration with Lyle Lovett for their duet of ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’.
