The family in the 1950s decided to move to Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is said that while Albert Green was a teenager, he was kicked out of the family home for listening to Jackie Wilson from his devoutly religious father.

AL GREEN WIFE

On October 18, 1974, shortly after the release of ‘Al Green Explores Your Mind’, Green’s girlfriend, Mary Woodson White, attacked him before committing suicide at her Memphis home. Despite the fact that White was an already married woman, he became angry when Green refused to marry her. He got rid of his anger when he soaked him with a pot of boiling semolina (corn-based food that is ground into a coarse meal and then boiled) causing severe burns on Green’s back, stomach and arms. Then she went ahead taking her .38 pistol and killed herself. Police during their investigation found a note in White’s bag stating his intentions and reasons.

Al Green then met the love of her heart, Shirley Kyles and the couple married in 1977 but unfortunately, Shirley filed for divorce in 1978 and 1981. In the final divorce complaint, Shirley stated that Green had referred her to domestic violence during their marriage. . Green also accused her of ‘cruel and inhumane treatment’ in a counter-complaint. She then testified and said that in the year 1978, while she was five months pregnant, Green beat her with a boot for refusing to have sex. The assault resulted in head injuries, which required stitches. After the accident, she filed for divorce, but they reconciled. There before, Green denied having beaten his wife, but under oath in 1982 he admitted to marital abuse.
