Adam Silver is an American businessman, attorney and sports executive, fifth and current commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA), born April 25, 1962 in Rye, New York.
Silver joined the NBA in 1992 and held various positions with the league, becoming COO and deputy commissioner under his predecessor and mentor David Stern in 2006. When Stern retired in 2014, he was named the new commissioner.
While commissioner, the League has continued to grow economically and worldwide, especially in China. Controversies during his tenure included racist remarks by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in 2014, whom he banned for life from the game, and the PRC’s reaction to comments made by Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey in support of the Hong Kong protests of the year 2019.

Silver grew up in an American Jewish family and grew up in Rye, New York, a northern suburb of New York City in Westchester County. Silver attended Rye High School and graduated in 1980.
After graduating from high school, he attended Duke University, graduating in the year 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. After college, he worked as a legislative assistant to US Congressman Les AuCoin from 1984 to 1985. He then studied law at the University of Chicago Law School and graduated in 1988 with a law degree.

On April 25, 2014, TMZ Sports released a video of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling holding a conversation with Sterling’s girlfriend that included racist remarks. He responded on April 29, 2014, announcing that he had been banned from the NBA for life.
In addition, he fined the pound of 2.5 million dollars, the maximum allowed by the NBA constitution. He stripped Sterling of nearly all of his Clippers authority and urged the owners to vote to expel Sterling from the Clippers’ property. Sterling was refused to enter any Clippers facility and participate in any NBA game. It was one of the main severe penalties ever imposed on a professional sports owner.

Adam Silver issues a statement on Kobe Bryant’s death
Hours after Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others tragically died in a helicopter crash, NBA commissioner Adam Silver released a statement. Silver took over as commissioner in February 2014, just over two seasons before Bryant retired.
Silver praised Bryant a lot after his retirement. He called Bryant ‘one of the greatest players in the history of our game’. This came after a storybook end to his career with the Los Angeles Lakers in which he lost 60 points in a winning performance against the Utah Jazz.
