Plastic surgeon Dr. Luca Piombino explains to Woman Magazine how a face lift surgical procedure can rejuvenate your face!
Every woman’s dream is to maintain a youthful appearance despite the passing of the years. Thanks to the face lift procedure, it’s possible to restore a younger look to your face with natural and harmonious results.
Over the years, the normal ageing process leads to a loss of skin elasticity and firmness of the face and neck, accentuating wrinkles and expression lines and making the face look more tired, more relaxed, and less radiant.
To maintain a youthful appearance, a facelift is an increasingly in demand procedure that redefines the features of one’s face.
Plastic surgeon Dr. Luca Piombino explains to Woman Magazine what is involved in a facelift surgery.
First of all, says Dr. Piombino, a face lift denotes a set of procedures whose main objective is to firm and rejuvenate areas of the face that have lost their youthfulness. Nowadays, the lifting of tissues no longer only concerns the skin, but also the underlying muscle bands to restore the original firmness of the face without distorting the features and allowing for longer lasting remodeling.
What is a facelift?
Plastic surgeon Dr. Piombino explains that a facelift surgery consists of a set of procedures aimed at remodeling the skin and subcutaneous and muscular tissues in order to achieve facial rejuvenation and reduce expression lines. The motility of the facial muscles remains intact, so the face retains its natural expressiveness.
What to expect from a facelift
For the facelift procedure, explains Dr. Luca Piombino, there are several surgical methods. A mini facelift is a minimally invasive technique performed under local anesthesia with sedation which allows for the restoration of the skin and muscles of only one sector of the face. A cervicofacial lift allows for the skin and underlying muscles to be lifted and stretched by means of a more extensive surgical access incision in order to simultaneously rejuvenate the frontal, geniene and mandibular-cervical area.
In the mini facelift, small incisions are made hidden between the frontal scalp and the pre-auricular area or the sub-auricular scalp, depending on the type of sectoral lifting chosen. Through these incisions, the skin of the face is disconnected from the underlying muscular planes; the latter are then repositioned upwards and backwards. The skin is redistributed over the muscles with minimal stretching and the excess skin is removed. The operation is completed by suturing of the wounds with internal stitches or very fine threads.
In the cervicofacial lift, the incision line is continuous and starts in the hair above the temples, descends in front of the ear, goes past the earlobe, turns posterior to the auricle and ends in the hair at the nape. Through this incision, the skin, subcutaneous and muscular tissues can be lifted, which are then fixed (by means of internal stitches) higher than the initial position. The skin is then redistributed on the underlying muscular plane by eliminating any excess skin.
The results
The result of this surgery depends on several factors, adds Dr. Piombino, such as the patient’s initial clinical condition, the patient’s ability to heal and compliance with the post-operative instructions given by the surgeon.
It is fundamental to refrain from sun exposure until the scars have completely stabilized. Results are evident from the very beginning of the post-operative phase; however, the natural ageing process leads to fading of the results as time goes on.
