Prince Harry supporting art and charity at Sentebale event

Prince Harry champions art and charity at the Sentebale fundraiser, showcasing his commitment to important causes.

In a remarkable convergence of art and philanthropy, Prince Harry took to the stage at a recent fundraiser for his charity, Sentebale, held in a Lower East Side art gallery. This event not only showcased contemporary art but also underscored the pressing need for community support in the face of ongoing global challenges. With a heartfelt acknowledgment of his novice status in the art world, Harry expressed gratitude to gallery owner Ki Smith for the opportunity to engage with the vibrant art community.

The power of art to unite

During his address, Prince Harry emphasized the transformative power of art to convene and connect individuals. “What I do know is the ability for art to be able to convene and bring people together, and that is needed now more than ever in today’s world,” he stated. This sentiment resonated deeply with the audience, which included notable figures such as journalist Ronan Farrow and artists Rakuko Naito and Jorge Luis Rodriguez. The exhibition, titled “Friend,” featured works from minimalist and op-art legends, with proceeds benefiting Sentebale’s initiatives across southern Africa.

Sentebale’s mission and impact

Founded in 2006 by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, Sentebale aims to support vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS. Sophie Chandauka, chair of the board, shared poignant insights into the dire circumstances faced by the youth in Lesotho during Harry’s initial visit. “Ninety percent of the population was either too old, too young, or too sick to work,” she recounted, highlighting the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic. Nearly two decades later, while biomedical advances have improved conditions, the youth still grapple with significant challenges.

Building a community of support

As Sentebale adapts its strategies to provide holistic support through health and wealth programs, the organization has also expanded its outreach to new audiences, particularly in the United States. Chandauka noted the importance of creating a supportive community in the U.S. to bolster their efforts. This initiative gained momentum during a recent polo tournament in Miami, where they engaged with philanthropists eager to contribute to the cause.

Smith’s involvement in the organization culminated in a visit to Lesotho, where he witnessed firsthand the impact of Sentebale’s work. A memorable outdoor event, sparked by a blackout, transformed into a communal gathering around a bonfire, fostering open dialogue between local youth and visitors. This experience reinforced Smith’s commitment to youth entrepreneurship, a core value of Sentebale.

As the evening concluded, Prince Harry expressed his admiration for Smith’s swift organization of the fundraiser, acknowledging the collaborative spirit that made the event a success. The synergy between art and philanthropy not only raised funds for a noble cause but also highlighted the essential role of community in addressing pressing social issues.
