On Monday, the Archewell Foundation, established by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, unveiled its third annual impact report, shedding light on its philanthropic endeavors since its inception in 2021. This report comes at a pivotal time, following a notable decline in donations from $13 million in its first year to just $2 million in the second. However, recent figures indicate a resurgence, with the foundation receiving $5.7 million in 2023, primarily from donations and grants.

Financial insights and community support

The report not only highlights the financial trajectory of the Archewell Foundation but also emphasizes its commitment to community support. In 2023, the foundation disbursed $1.3 million in grants, including a significant $250,000 grant to Women’s Wellness (Spa)ce, a trauma-informed center in North Philadelphia founded by Ashley Biden. This initiative reflects the foundation’s dedication to addressing pressing social issues and supporting vulnerable populations.

Innovative programs and initiatives

Among the notable initiatives launched by Archewell in 2023 is the Welcome Project, aimed at fostering community among resettled refugee women across the United States. This program encourages participation in various activities, including cooking, hiking, and painting, thereby promoting social integration and support networks. The foundation has continued to expand this initiative into 2024, providing resources to groups in Washington, DC, Oakland, Massachusetts, and Decatur.

Expanding outreach and support networks

In addition to the Welcome Project, the Archewell Foundation has introduced the Archewell Parents’ Network, a support group designed for parents whose children have experienced online harms. Initially focused on the United States, this program has now extended its reach to Canada and the UK, showcasing the foundation’s commitment to addressing global challenges faced by families in the digital age.

The report concludes with a powerful message from Archewell’s co-executive directors, James Holt and Shauna Nep, emphasizing the foundation’s mission: “Our purpose is simple yet impactful: to show up, do good. To drive positive change, rally for communities in need, and nurture spaces where everyone is seen, valued, and supported.” As the Archewell Foundation continues to evolve, its focus on community engagement and support remains at the forefront of its mission.
